My Teaching Philosophy

The most beautiful part of life is learning and sharing it with others. I think this is my ultimate life goal: to absorb all that I can and experience life with those around me. Teaching is a recent endeavor, though upon making the decision to become a teacher, I have the found inner peace I've been searching for. With my certification, I am able to teach EC-12 Art and EC-6 General Studies, but my passion is in art or grades K-1.

My teaching philosophy is that every student should have a safe environment where they can express their feelings, ideas, and let loose their creativity. I believe that art techniques should be taught, but if a student wants to color a horse magenta, let them color the horse magenta. Studies have shown that people who regularly engage themselves in art learn more and do better in other subjects, which is why it is a shame that many districts are cutting their fine art programs.

Parental involvement is an important aspect to the success of students, and I'd really like for parents to see what their children are accomplishing, artistically and through their personal growth as a person within my class. Art shows, portfolios, and take home projects will be highly integrated in my classroom.

I believe that effort should be the majority of the grade. Someone might be a great artist, but if they put forth little to no effort, their grade will reflect that. On the other hand, if someone is a poor artist but really tries and grows during the year, their grade will reflect that effort. Life is 10% circumstance, 90% of what you do with it.
